REC VOLLEYBALL RULES
2 teams of 6 players
A game of rock, paper, scissors decides who serves first.
The player in the back right position is the server. They (typically) stand behind the base line. With WRSC, you can stand as close as you need to put the ball into play.
Balls can be served overhand, underhand, or can be thrown.
A served ball must go over the net and into the opposing team’s side of the court. It is allowed to touch the net.
If it goes out of bounds without the other team touching it or does not successfully make it over the net, it is a point to the defending team.
A server continues to serve until the other team scores a point.
Once a point is scored, the team who scored gets the serve.
A single person can serve successfully up to 6 times before we rotate (that team keeps the serve).
The opposing team gets 3 touches to try and get the ball back over the net to the other team’s side.
Each person can only have 1 consecutive touch of the ball, unless their first touch was a block at the net.
The play is over and a point is awarded to the team who didn’t commit the offense when:
The ball hits the floor, ceiling, wall, or other fixture.
A player touches the net or their body crosses the center line
A player hits the ball for 2+ touches in a row (not off of their own block)
A player contacts the ball with their foot/feet (a foot touch is considered any contact by the ball to the area below the knee).
The 3 touches is exceeded
The ball is put in play over the net, but lands out of bounds.
The team who scored the point serves the next ball.
Players rotate positions clockwise with the server leaving the court for a substitute when the ball returns to the team after a lost point.
The very first person to serve on each team stays in play for a full rotation
Notes:
Players can play the ball using any part of their body except their feet.
Players can be out of bounds when playing the ball.
As soon as player makes contact with the ball, it is in their possession. If the ball was going out of bounds but a player plays it, is is deemed still in play and their team gets 2 more touches to try and get it back over
We do not play with the attack line in Rec.
